Selvin's parents immigrated from Russia to Tooele, Utah in 1909, drawn by family ties to the Jewish agricultural community which had settled in the central part of that state. Selvin's father maintained a store in predominately Mormon township of Tooele and also served as a senator in the Utah state legislature.
