History

The black hospital workers at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) went out on strike in 1968. Shortly after the strike, AFSCME began their drive to organize the hospital workers in the University of California system. AFSCME Local 1650 represented the UCSF workers until its demise on 1 September 1983. Beginning on 2 September 1983, the UCSF workers were represented by AFSCME Local 3215. The change in locals occurred when AFSCME decided to change to a separate local for each campus in the University of California (UC) system. AFSCME won the right to represent the UC workers in an election in 1984.
