Scope and Contents

Photographs of Union WAGE staff and volunteers participating in various strikes and demonstrations, conferences, meetings, fundraisers, benefits and other events in San Francisco and other places in California (and a few out of state), circa 1971-1982, including images of members attending and picketing Industrial Workers Commission (IWC) legislative hearings. Also contains photographs of members producing the organization's newsletter Union WAGE. Includes photographs of Union Wage leader Jean Maddox, newsletter editor Maxine Jenkins, politician Dianne Feinstein, and one photograph of Gloria Steinem supporting No on Proposition L. Most of the photographs were taken by Cathy Cade.

Historical

Union WAGE (Women's Alliance to Gain Equality) was founded on International Women's Day, March 8, 1971, at an educational conference sponsored by the National Organization for Women (NOW), at the University of California, Berkeley. Union WAGE was a politically non-partisan, non-profit organization for "working women" which included housewives, unemployed, retired, and welfare women. The organization's purpose was to achieve "equal rights, equal pay, and equal opportunity" for working women.
