Scope and Content of Collection

Sound recording of interview conducted with UNITE HERE Local 2 member Alfredo Carleto conducted by Jessica Inouye. This recording is part of an oral history project documenting the historic 2004 hotel strike and lock-out in San Francisco that lasted 53 days. The struggle pitted a largely immigrant workforce against multi-national corporations which was part of a larger nationally coordinated contract campaign. Originally from El Salvador, Carleto served as a busser at the Crowne Plaza Union Square. In his interview, he describes his experience as a picket line captain during the strike.
