Scope and Content of Collection

Sound recording of interview with UNITE HERE Local 2 member Linda Knighton conducted by Jessica Inouye. This recording is part of an oral history project documenting the historic 2004 hotel strike and lock-out in San Francisco that lasted 53 days. The struggle pitted a largely immigrant workforce against multi-national corporations which was part of a larger nationally coordinated contract campaign. Knighton worked as a banquet cook at the Omni Hotel. In her interview, she shares stories from her time in the picket line and describes her experience as a member of the contract negotiation team. A media training recipient, Knighton also describes her various efforts to communicate with community organizations and media outlets during the strike. Finally, she describes the subsequent efforts to sustain the contract negotiations following the end of the lockout, as well as her own leadership role in the ongoing struggle to enforce hotel compliance with the existing contract.
