Scope and Content of Collection

Sound recording of interview with UNITE HERE Local 2 president Mike Casey conducted by Bill Shields. This recording is part of an oral history project documenting the historic 2004 hotel strike and lock-out in San Francisco that lasted 53 days. The struggle pitted a largely immigrant workforce against multi-national corporations which was part of a larger nationally coordinated contract campaign. In his interview, Casey describes the movement towards national coordination within the service industry leading up to the events of 2004-2006, the tactical and strategic decision-making regarding the strike, and the important gains made for workers due to the strike's success.
