Scope and Contents
Sound recording of interview with UNITE HERE Local 2 union field representative Sam Zeher conducted by Jill Owen. This recording is part of an oral history project documenting the historic 2004 hotel strike and lock-out in San Francisco that lasted 53 days. The struggle pitted a largely immigrant workforce against multi-national corporations which was part of a larger nationally coordinated contract campaign. Zeher worked as a union field representative for the St. Francis, the Handlery, and Clift hotels. In his interview, Zeher describes the major issues at stake in the 2004-2006 contract negotiation, the process of organizing and education union members and hotel employees leading up to the strike, and his experiences as a union employee during and after the strike.
