Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The contents of these boxes provide examples of two ongoing activities of the California CIO Information and Research Department, which Paul Pinsky directed in the 1940's; 1) the publication of information for unionists on legal, legislative, political, and economic issues of the day, e.g. segregation and racism, big business, taxes, the Smith and McCarren Acts; and 2) the conduct of research to provide evidence and testimony on behalf of particular unions at government hearings regarding wages, benefits, and working conditions.

The material in the Pinsky collection primarily reflects the issues and activities of the CIO during the 1940's and early 1950's. Included in the first portion of the collection is an incomplete set of the California CIO publication Facts and Figures. Facts and Figures was a monthly research journal aimed at discussing labor's point of view on national and state economic issues. The publication began in 1942, was discontinued in 1944, and was later revived in 1945. The collection contains volume one from 1942 and assorted issues up to 1953. A complete set of Facts and Figures is available from the ILWU office in San Francisco.

Also included in the first portion of the collection are CIO Research Department memos from 1946 to 1948 and Research Department reprts ranging from 1942 up to 1947.
