This series contains materials Cherny gathered in the course of researching and drafting his book-in-progress, San Francisco Reds: Communists in the San Francisco Bay Area, 1919-1958, a study of over 50 members of the Communist Party of the United States of America (CPUSA) based in the San Francisco Bay Area between the founding of the Party in 1919 through a widespread exodus from the Party in the late-1950s. Materials supporting the book contained in this series include reproductions and translations of Communist Party reports, communications, and meeting minutes from the Russian State Archive of Socio-Political History (RGASPI); reproductions of correspondence, memoirs, and publications held in U.S. archives, including the Tamiment Library at New York University, the California State Archives, and Hoover Institution Library and Archives, among others; original and reproduction publications from CPUSA organizers and organs; FBI files stemming from surveillance of suspected CPUSA members and activities; and publications by other scholars. Also included are transcripts and notes from Cherny's oral history interviews with CPUSA members, originally recorded for his biography of Harry Bridges.
