Scope and Contents
The records document a range of the union’s activities, including the period when the local was affiliated with the International Typographers Union (ITU), Mailers Local 18. In 1986, it chose to disaffiliate with the ITU and become Mailers Local 15 of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT), a process that initially led the ITU to put the local in receivership. After court action, its affiliation with the IBT was achieved. The collection documents many of the issues related to the change in affiliation, including relations with the international body, initiation and dues payments, health, welfare, and pension benefits, and gaining recognition from employers. Also significant are documents from the 1994 strike between the San Francisco Newspaper Agency and the Conference of Newspaper Unions. Also contains agreements and negotiating documents with newspapers from Fresno to Sacramento (Series 5: Contract Administration).
