Biographical / Historical

In 1901, San Francisco Mailers' Union No. 18 was founded by men who worked in the mail rooms of the San Francisco newspapers; mailers bundle the newspapers, insert the advertisements, and knot the papers for delivery. The mailers affiliated with the International Typographical Union (ITU) and received their charter on April 16, 1901, a charter bearing the names of 40 members. On September 30, 1919, across the bay in Oakland, another unit of the ITU was formed by five mailers; thus was chartered Oakland Mailers' Union No. 63. On February 1, 1945, a merger of Local 18 and 63 resulted in the San Francisco-Oakland Mailers' Union No. 18. By 1978 this became the Mailers of the Greater Bay Area of Northern California.
