International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Local Lodge 9 (Vallejo, Calif.) records
Abstract
Bulk of the material consists of the records of International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Local 9, (Vallejo, Calif.) Mare Island Naval Shipyard. Includes a sampling of grievance cases, documenting issues such as drug cases and denial of security clearances, in some cases for psychiatric reasons (which in turn meant loss of employment); and privacy, search and seizure. The records document the intersection between a civilian workforce and military culture. Typical complaints for Mare Island against employees were UA (unauthorized absence), or insubordination; typical complaints by the employees relate to compensation. The drug cases (marijuana, etc.) though intriguing, are not representative. Also included are materials on the base closure, which also documents issues of re-employment for boilermakers.
