Scope and Contents
Files and other material created and collected by Joseph A. Murphy documenting his lifelong involvement in the labor movement, particularly as a business agent for the Hod Carriers Local 36 in San Francisco. Local 36 files cover a wide variety of activities and issues including union elections, contract bargaining, health and welfare benefits and arbitration cases. This material includes correspondence, agreements, clippings, court transcripts, flyers, telegrams and petitions. Additional files document the making of documentary films and oral histories about the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) and the incident involving the lynching of IWW members in Centralia, Washington, in 1919. (Murphy participated in the protests following the Centralia lynching and was active in the IWW, 1919-1932.) Also included are files related to the Joseph A. Murphy Center for Labor Education and Social Action, including newsletters, flyers and reports, and a radio broadcast script on farmworker union organizing in the 1960s. Additional material includes 87 photographs, 10 pins and badges, 2 rolls of microfilm, 8 books, 2 photograph albums and 20 audio cassette tapes.
