Scope and Contents

This collection documents the activities of the Plant Closures Project (PCP). Consists of organizational records dated from 1981 to 1991 , the bulk from 1982-1989, including budget, planning and reorganization documents, minutes, funding requests, reports, newsletters, impact statistics, steering committee leadership handbook, steering committee and advisory board members, and plant closure campaign records (Sierra Design, Rainbow Workers Cooperative, Delaval Foundry, Blue Cross).

The collection also contains articles and various documents dated from 1983 to 2005 pertaining to the Full Employment movement, workers ownership, eminent domain, organizations addressing unemployment, the Unemployment Exchange Association, and the Busy Needle Workers Cooperative.

Administrative History

The Plant Closures Project (PCP) was a coalition founded in 1981 by labor organizers, religious leaders and community activists to help workers address the problem of plant closures in the San Francisco Bay Area. The PCP was involved in community education, legislation, direct action, alternative economic development, and networking on a statewide and national level. Its main focus was building a grassroots movement to challenge plant closures. The PCP was located at 433 Jefferson Street, Oakland, California.

Biographical Note

Susan Schacher was a community activist and a member of the Plant Closures Project steering committee in the 1980s.
