Biographical note

Herbert A. Mills was born in 1930 in Dearborn, Michigan. He obtained a B.A. Degree in Political Science from the University of Michigan. In 1970 he received a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California, Irvine where he wrote his dissertation "Toward a General Theory of Organization Life." From 1963 until his retirement in 1991, Mills held a variety of positions in the International Longshoreman Workers Union (ILWU), Local 10, including Caucus and Convention Delegate and Secretary-Treasurer. His published writings include journal articles, monographs, newspaper articles, and book contributions.
