Scope and Contents

Consists of materials documenting John Reimann's activism in Bay Area Carpenters unions Local 36 (Oakland, Calif.) and Local 713 (Hayward, Calif.). Includes material on the Coordinated Housing Organizing Project (CHOP) focused on organizing the unorganized; materials on Carpenters for a Stronger Union; documents related to the 1973 and 1999 wildcat strikes; "On the Level" and other rank and file publications; and materials on union elections and 1980s rank and file activism. The collection also includes contracts documenting declining wage standards and benefits from 1970s to 2000s, proceedings from International conventions containing Reimann's floor speeches that illustrate the conservative stance of leadership; and a report published by the International, "Business Offensive - Counter to Davis-Bacon Act."

Biography

John Reimann was a carpenter activist in Bay Area Carpenters Union Local 36 (Oakland, Calif.) and Local 713 (Hayward, Calif.) He was the recording secretary of Local 713 for three terms. He participated in the 1973 Bay Area carpenters wildcat strike and was an elected leader of the 1999 wildcat strike.
