James Koshikawa diary
Scope and Contents
Manuscript diary of James Koshikawa, a Japanese immigrant to Decoto, Alameda County, California in 1906. The writer discusses daily work chores primarily having to do with agricultural and work camp life in and about Decoto; and in Oakland: saloon work, the Japan Brewery, the Brown Phosphate Company, candy store employment (the Christmas season rush), the Japanese employment office. Study lessons, examination preparation, the Oakland Evening and Technical High Schools, the San Francisco Earthquake and Fire are also discussed. Correspondence sent and received are documented as well as money spent, borrowed and loaned.
