Joseph A. Murphy Scrapbook Collection
Scope and Contents
Comprises two scrapbooks created and collected by Joseph A. Murphy and Doris Murphy documenting his lifelong involvement in the labor movement, particularly as a business agent for the Hod Carriers Local 36 in San Francisco. The first scrapbook, a red leather-bound album spanning the years 1943 to 1980, contains photographs of Murphy with union members and leaders as well as family and friends. Also contains newsclippings related to the San Franicso building trades, some loose-leaf photographs, and a poem, "The Proletariat" by Joe A. Murphy. The second scrapbook, measuring 14.5" x 11.5" contains newsclippings spanning the years 1975 to 1988. Loose material tucked into the back of the scrapbook include newsclippings, in particular those related to the documentary "The Wobblies" as well as a 1954 Trust Agreement between different locals of the Hod Carriers union, the Mason and Builders Association of California, Inc. and the Master Plasterers Association of San Francisco; a tribute to Katherine Schmidt, and a 1949 agreement between Hod Carriers Union Local No. 36 and S.Y.
