Scope and Content of Collection
Sound recording of interview with UNITE HERE Local 2 member Antonio Cortez conducted by Corey Datz-Greenberg. This recording is part of an oral history project documenting the historic 2004 hotel strike and lock-out in San Francisco that lasted 53 days. The struggle pitted a largely immigrant workforce against multi-national corporations which was part of a larger nationally coordinated contract campaign. Originally from Mexico, Cortez worked as a housekeeper at the Hyatt since 1975. In her interview, Cortez describes her experience as part of the negotation team in the lead-up to the 2004 strike, and details her participation in acts of civil disobedience relating to the struggle for a new labor contract.
