Scope and Content of Collection

Sound recording of interview with UNITE HERE Local 2 member Baltazar Medina conducted by Corey Datz-Greenberg. This recording is part of an oral history project documenting the historic 2004 hotel strike and lock-out in San Francisco that lasted 53 days. The struggle pitted a largely immigrant workforce against multi-national corporations which was part of a larger nationally coordinated contract campaign. Originall from Mexico, Medina served as a cafeteria cook at the Mark Hopkins hotel. In his interview, Medina describes his active participation in the strike and recounts the poor weather conditions and economic hardships strikers faced.
