Scope and Content of Collection
Sound recording of interview with UNITE HERE Local 2 member Delia Medina conducted by Riddhi Mehta. This recording is part of an oral history project documenting the historic 2004 hotel strike and lock-out in San Francisco that lasted 53 days. The struggle pitted a largely immigrant workforce against multi-national corporations which was part of a larger nationally coordinated contract campaign. Originally from El Salvador, Medina worked as a room cleaner at the Hyatt. In her interview, Medina describes her experiences as a member of union delegations delivering petitions to hotel management and HR staff, being arrested during street demonstrations and other acts of civil disoendience, and serving as a captain on the picket line, where she worked up to 15 hours a day.
