Lamoin Werlein-Jaen Oral History
Scope and Content of Collection
Sound recording of interview with former UNITE HERE Local 2 vice-president Lamoin Werlein-Jaen conducted by Bill Shields. This recording is part of an oral history project documenting the historic 2004 hotel strike and lock-out in San Francisco that lasted 53 days. The struggle pitted a largely immigrant workforce against multi-national corporations which was part of a larger nationally coordinated contract campaign. Originally from the Republic of Panama, Werlein-Jaen was in charge of the union's hotel department at the time of the strike. He served as elected UNITE HERE Local 2 Vice-President from 2000 to 2006 and elected Secretary Treasurer from 2006 to 2012. In his interview, he discusses the organization and history of the Local 2 union, the importance of Local 2 to the broader labor movement, the larger shifts in affairs among the hotel industry leading up to the events of 2004-2006, and the key players in the industry at the time of the contract campaign. He shares his perspective on the 2004-2006 contract campaign, discussing everything from the culture of Local 2 to the various mechanisms and tactics used to implement and strengthen support for the campaign. He also describes how the picket lines were organized and maintained, and shares moving stories about picketers and their experiences.
