Scope and Content of Collection
Sound recording of interview with UNITE HERE Local 2 union field representative for the Four Seasons Hotel, Lorraine Powell, conducted by Bob Owen. This recording is part of an oral history project documenting the historic 2004 hotel strike and lock-out in San Francisco that lasted 53 days. The struggle pitted a largely immigrant workforce against multi-national corporations which was part of a larger nationally coordinated contract campaign. In her interview, Powell describes her transition into union activism as a shop steward and organizer at the Parc 55 Hotel prior to joining Local 2 at the Four Seasons Hotel. She discusses the union's efforts to educate workers about the need to coordinate nationally in order to leverage more power against expanding hotel corporations, and her own role in the educational campagins of Local 2 leading up to the strike and lockout. She describes her experience as manager of the picket line at the Four Seasons Hotel.
