Scope and Content of Collection

Sound recording of interview with UNITE HERE Local 2 union field representative for the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Mariana Wong, conducted by Bill Shields. This recording is part of an oral history project documenting the historic 2004 hotel strike and lock-out in San Francisco that lasted 53 days. The struggle pitted a largely immigrant workforce against multi-national corporations which was part of a larger nationally coordinated contract campaign. In her interview, Wong, originally from Hong Kong, describes her transition into the hotel industry after becoming a housekeeper in 1995 and her growing involvement in union organizing, from an active member to a shop steward to permanent union employee. In 2006 she was elected vice-president of Local 2. She describes her experiences with the Marriot contract negotiation which settled in 2001 and the activities of the Local 2 leading up to the 2004 contract negotiation, as well as her experiences on the picket line during the strike and lockout.
