Scope and Content of Collection

Interview with UNITE HERE Local 2 member Usha Bebbisse conducted by Riddhi Mehta. This recording is part of an oral history project documenting the historic 2004 hotel strike and lock-out in San Francisco that lasted 53 days. The struggle pitted a largely immigrant workforce against multi-national corporations which was part of a larger nationally coordinated contract campaign. A waitress at the Fisherman's Wharf Holiday Inn, Bebbisse was one of two members of the union delegation sent to Europe to work with unions in Europe. Bebbisse met with Chairman Webster of the InterContinental Hotels Group, visited union members in Germany, and demonstrated in the InterContinental Hotel in Paris. In her interview, she describes her experiences abroad and on the picket line, and details how the union maintained support for the contract campaign in the Fisherman's Wharf Holiday Inn following the end of the lockout.
