Biography

George Raya attended Sacramento State University, where he first got involved in union organizing. While a student, he founded the Society for Homosexual Freedom (SHF) and in a landmark case, successfully sued the university for the right to have SHF recognized as an official LGBT campus organization in 1971. Raya attended University of California, Berkeley, for law school, but did not graduate. He went on to work as a liaison for the Society for Individual Rights (SIR) to the California State Legislature. He lobbied the California State Legislature for the consensual sex (AB 489) and employment discrimination (AB 633) bills, and was a part of the 1977 National Gay Task Force meeting at the White House.
