Sound recording of interview with glazier and former Secretary Treasurer of the San Francisco Building and Construction Trades Council, Stan Smith, conducted by Harvey Schwartz. This oral history was conducted as part of the Labor Archives and Research Center Oral History Project. In the interview, Smith describes his career as a labor organizer and leader in the building trades, his efforts to diversify the building trades workforce, his participation on the boards of various labor and community organizations, including the San Francisco Labor Council, California State Building and Construction Trades Council and the Ella Hill Hutch Community Center, and his contributions as a writer to Organized Labor, the newspaper of the Building and Construction Trades Council. Smith dicusses various local labor leaders and Building Trades Council associates, including Dan Del Carlo, Larry Mazzola, and Joe L. Sullivan, and describes his relationship with and support for Harvey Milk and other political leaders.

Biography

Stan Smith was born on September 20, 1930, to parents Fred and Eunice Smith. Smith moved to San Francisco from Downieville with his family when he was in junior high. He joined the Marine Corps Reserve in 1948 and served until his retirement in 1967. Smith joined the Glaziers Local Union #718 as an apprentice in 1953 and was elected as the union's president in 1958. In 1965, he became a Field Representative for the union. Smith served as Secretary Treasurer of the San Francisco Building and Construction Trades Council from 1975 to 2000, at which point he retired. He was active in numerous other community and labor organizations, serving on the Executive Board for the San Francisco Labor Council, California State Building and Construction Trades Council, as well as on the Board of the Ella Hill Hutch Community Center, Young Community Developers and the Golden Gate Bridge Board of Directors. Smith also contributed to the newspaper of the Building and Construction Trades Council, Organized Labor.
