Instructional materials for women in trades and union work

 Collection
Identifier: larc-ms-0446

Scope and Contents

This collection of instructional materials focuses on education and awareness of gender discrimination in the workplace and occupational training programs for women in nontraditional jobs, trades, and unions. This collection also contains five social/political pamphlets from the Radical Education Project, and one pamphlet from the Berkeley-Oakland Women’s Union, a Socialist feminist organization of women against sexism and exploitation.

The U.S. Department of Labor, Women’s Bureau's 1981 “Women in Apprenticeship” Training Workshop provided training guides, quizzes, fact sheets, and leaflets to educate participants on affirmative action programs and promote women’s participation in trades and nontraditional employment. The training modules covered topics such as federal laws on sex discrimination and pregnancy discrimination in employment, local and state resources, compliance with federal employment laws, and a review of 1978 reauthorization of the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA).

The Coalition of Labor Union Women's 1983 “Color Me Union” training series was an 8-session program designed primarily for women to develop a variety of skills, techniques and strategies to aid them in advancing within their union.

The collection contains five pamphlets published around 1965-1970 by Radical Education Project covering social, political, and economic issues and its impact on women's issues at home or in the workplace. Three of the pamphlets are from the Bay Area division, which cooperated with Radical Education Project in Michigan and the New England Free Press, distributing much of its material.

The collection also contains one 1975 pamphlet published by the Berkeley-Oakland Women’s Union, a Socialist feminist organization of women against sexism and exploitation in work.
