Scope and Contents

From the Sub-Series:

Sub-Series 2.2, Farm Worker Life and Conditions, consists of photographs from an independent, personal project of Fietinghoff's in which she traveled through the Central Valley in 1977 documenting farmworkers, mostly women at work and at home with their families. These photos were taken in Fresno County and Salinas. Photos of labor picture farmworkers packing tomatoes, picking lettuce, picking and packing grapes, and drying and rolling raisins. A few photos show children playing and working in the fields. Includes photos of used containers of pesticides laying in the fields. This Sub-Series contains photos of farmworker housing, which include images of grower-owned dilapidated barracks located in the middle of farm fields. Many photos show mothers with their children, informal family portraits, a Fresno County day care center, and parents with children at Fairchild Labor Camp. There are several images of farm machinery and a few photos of town streets and business and help wanted signage. The Lenare folder contains photos of a Lenare community women's group painting houses for local families.
